Though commonly viewed as two different universes, photography and film have have had a significant influence on each other. Recently a dialogue has emerged contributing to further interdisciplinary research on the two media and their languages. Expanding this research line, the workshop “Cinema on Paper” will examine in further depth the influence of cinema and its modes on the photobook. Combining theory with practice and specifically through specific case studies participants will explore “cinema on paper” in terms of narrative structure, subject matter and ontology. Areas of focus will include the migration of cinematic narrative forms and the translation of film genres and discourses in photobooks as well as the culture of the cinematic and its formalist concerns on the photobook. The workshop is open to photographers, filmmakers, visual artists, historians, art historians, and individuals who have a keen interest in films and photobooks.
